The honest math

Why pay $15,000–$25,000 for a generator?

Whole-home backup used to mean a noisy gas generator and a five-figure check. Solrite does the same job — quieter, cleaner, and for $20/mo.

Whole-home generator

Standby gas generator

$15,000 – $25,000

Up-front cash · plus install, gas line, permits, and yearly service.

  • Burns natural gas or propane every time it runs
  • Requires permits, gas line, and a concrete pad
  • Loud — runs at 65–75 dB outside your bedroom
  • Annual service contract: $300–$600/year
  • Doesn't lower your normal electric bill — only runs in outages
  • Adds nothing on a sunny day · sits idle 99% of the year

Solrite VPP

60 kWh Duracell battery

$20/mo

$0 down · no install fee · no service contracts.

  • Whole-home backup for 24+ hours, silent and clean
  • $0.12/kWh flat electric rate, locked for 12 months
  • Stores your solar instead of selling it back at pennies
  • Earns you money during VPP grid events
  • Pairs with your existing solar — no rip-and-replace
  • Works every day, not just when the lights go out
The math: a $20K generator at zero financing is $20/mo for 83 years. Solrite gives you the same backup — plus a flat electric rate — starting today.

Why a Virtual Power Plant?

Your battery does more than keep your lights on.

When the grid needs extra power during peak demand, your participating Solrite-approved retail electric provider signals a "VPP event" to your battery. For one to two hours, your Duracell discharges into the grid at full power. You earn credit on the portion of that discharge that came from your solar — grid-sourced energy returned to the grid isn't credited. Then your battery refills from your solar. Call 346.398.3638 for the specific rates and credits available through your selected REP.

  • $20/mo flat.Covers the 60 kWh Duracell hardware, install, monitoring, operation, and maintenance. Solrite is the financier; install and service are performed by trained partner installers in our network. No down payment. Includes a monthly discount tied to enrollment with a participating Solrite-approved REP.
  • Locked-in pricing through a Solrite-approved REP.Solrite partners with select Texas retail electric providers. Specific rates and locked-in periods vary by REP. Call 346.398.3638 for a personalized quote.
  • Earn credits on VPP discharges. When your battery exports power to the grid during peak demand, you earn credits on the portion that came from your solar. Specific credit rates depend on your selected REP — call us for the details on your setup.
  • Works with your existing solar. No need to repaper your solar agreement. We integrate with what you already have.

A day with VPP

What changes for you? Almost nothing.

Your home keeps running like always. The battery and the grid handle everything in the background.

☀️
8:00 AM

Solar turns on.

Your panels start producing. Power flows to your home loads first, then any excess starts charging the Duracell battery.

🔋
2–3:00 PM

Battery is full.

The Duracell tops out. Your home is still running on solar. Excess production flows to the grid (no buyback at this time).

🏠
6:00 PM

Battery takes over.

Self-consumption kicks in. As the sun sets, the Duracell powers your AC, lights, and appliances directly from your stored solar — no grid pull.

🌅
6:00 AM

Brief grid bridge.

If the battery taps out before sunrise, the grid covers a short window at your locked-in REP rate. By 7:30 AM solar is back on and the cycle repeats.

VPP events run on top of your normal cycle.
When your REP signals an event (typically 1–2 hours, often 6–8 PM), your battery discharges at full inverter power into the grid regardless of home load. You earn credit on the portion of that discharge that came from your own solar — grid-sourced energy returned to the grid isn't credited. Specific credit rates depend on your selected REP. Call 346.398.3638 for details.

FAQ

Common questions, real answers.

Don't see yours? Reach out at hello@vppsolrite.com.

Where is this program available?
The Solrite battery program is currently Texas only, in homes served by one of the four investor-owned Transmission & Distribution Utilities (TDUs): Oncor (most of North/East Texas), CenterPoint Energy (greater Houston), AEP Texas (South / parts of West & Central Texas), and TNMP — Texas–New Mexico Power. Homes served by municipal utilities (Austin Energy, CPS Energy, etc.) or rural electric co-ops aren't eligible right now because the program runs through approved retail electric providers (REPs) in the deregulated TDU territories. Not sure which TDU you're on? It's printed on your monthly electric bill or on a sticker near your meter.
What does the $20/month cover, and how long is the term?
$20/month is your fixed monthly payment for 20 years under a Solrite Battery Virtual Power Agreement. It covers the 60 kWh Duracell hardware, install, monitoring, operation, and maintenance. Solrite is the financier and program operator — we own the system and stand behind it for the full term. Hands-on install and service are performed by trained installer partners in our network. Your payment doesn't change for the duration of the agreement.

The $20 figure already includes a $250/month discount tied to your enrollment with one of our Solrite-approved REPs. Switching to a non-approved REP — or tampering with battery settings — causes you to lose that discount, increasing your payment by $250/mo until you return to an approved REP.

In addition to the battery payment, you're enrolled with a Solrite-approved REP for an all-in electricity rate (no demand charges) locked in for an initial term. Specific rates and locked-in periods vary by REP. Call 346.398.3638 for the specifics on what's available in your area.

Who owns the battery, and who installs it?
Solrite owns the battery for the full 20-year term and is the financier and program operator. Your $20/month is for the use of the system and program participation — it isn't a lease-to-own arrangement.

Hands-on install is performed by a trained installer partner from Solrite's national network. After your application is approved, we dispatch your project to a partner installer in your area, who calls to schedule a site visit, confirms your home qualifies, and handles the install and commissioning. Ongoing service flows through the same network — but you always call Solrite first if anything goes wrong.

How do VPP credits work?
Your participating Solrite-approved REP occasionally signals a "VPP event" — typically 1 to 2 hours, often 6 to 8 PM, when the grid is under peak demand. During an event, your Duracell discharges at full inverter power straight to the grid, regardless of your home's current load.

You earn credit only on the portion of that discharge that came from your own solar. If your battery had been topped up from the grid (which happens occasionally after extended cloudy days), that grid-sourced energy returned during the event isn't credited. Specific credit rates depend on your selected REP — call 346.398.3638 for the details on your setup.

Heads up: the VPP credit mechanism is still being deployed. New customers will see normal battery operation first; credits begin once your REP activates the program for your install. We'll let you know the moment it goes live.

What does a typical day look like?
Solar starts producing around 8 AM and powers your home directly. Excess solar charges the battery — most days the Duracell is full by 2 or 3 PM. From then until 6 PM, your home runs on solar; any surplus flows to the grid (there is no solar buyback at this time, so that surplus is uncompensated). At 6 PM in summer (5 PM in winter), the battery enters self-consumption and powers your home through the evening. If the battery taps out before sunrise — usually around 5 to 6 AM — the grid covers a brief window at your locked-in REP rate until your solar kicks back on around 7:30 AM.
Will it work with my existing solar panels?
Yes, with two caveats. First, you have to own your solar — paid in cash, paid off, or financed through a loan in your name. Leased / PPA / TPO systems aren't eligible. Second, Solrite isn't responsible for the condition of your existing solar; you (or your original installer) remain responsible for monitoring, repairing, and maintaining the panels and inverter. Your dispatched installer partner will confirm system compatibility during the site visit, before install day.
Can I add more solar panels later?
Only with Solrite's written consent. Any future solar connected to the Duracell battery without our written approval has to be disconnected at your expense. If you're planning a system expansion, talk to us first — we can usually accommodate it.
Where does the battery install? Is internet required?
The 60 kWh Duracell is a 3-module stack that mounts inside your garage, alongside the inverter and a small disconnect. Your dispatched installer partner confirms exact placement during a site visit before install day — they'll check for a clear wall span, access to your main electrical panel, and that your hardwired internet is working.

Hardwired home internet is required — cable, fiber, or DSL with a router/modem at the home. Hotspots and mobile-only setups don't qualify because we need a stable connection to monitor the battery.

What happens during a power outage?
The battery automatically takes over within milliseconds — most customers notice nothing beyond the grid icon changing on their app. While the grid is down, the Duracell continues recharging from your solar during daylight, so a multi-day outage is well within range as long as you have sun. Heavy loads like AC and EV charging will deplete the battery faster; we recommend a few minutes during your install walk-through to identify which circuits are critical.
Do I have to switch my electricity provider, and can I switch back later?
Yes — switching to a Solrite-approved retail electric provider (REP) is required to enroll. Your REP locks in an all-in rate for an initial term. Specific rates and locked-in periods vary by REP — call 346.398.3638 for the specifics on what's available in your area.

Important: if your current electricity plan has an early termination fee (ETF), that fee is your responsibility when you switch. Solrite doesn't cover ETFs from your previous provider. Most Texas residential plans charge somewhere in the $100–$300 range if you cancel before your contract end date — check your plan's Electricity Facts Label (EFL) or call your current REP if you're not sure.

You're not locked to a single REP forever, but the math is straightforward: your $20/month price assumes you stay enrolled with a Solrite-approved REP. Switching to a non-approved provider — or tampering with battery settings — causes you to lose a $250/month discount on your battery payment. You'd remain in the program but your monthly payment would jump by $250 until you return to an approved REP. Paying off the battery early doesn't release this — the discount is tied to REP enrollment, not to the lease balance.

I'm on a free-nights or Tesla Electric plan today. Will it still work for me?
It can, but we want to be upfront: free-nights plans are popular with EV owners, and switching to a Solrite-approved REP's flat-rate plan will change the math. EVs typically pull 60–95 kWh overnight — more than the 60 kWh battery holds — so on a heavy-charging night you'd be pulling from your new REP for several hours at the flat rate. Some customers come out ahead anyway because of the VPP credits and the $20/mo lease; others don't. Your sales rep will walk through your specific usage with you before you commit, so you go in with eyes open.
Will the soft credit pull affect my credit score?
No. A soft inquiry is invisible to other lenders and does not affect your credit score in any way. We only do a soft pull at the qualification stage. If you proceed to install and lease activation, our finance partner may run a separate hard inquiry — we'll always tell you before that happens.
Who installs the system, and how long does it take?
Solrite is the program's financier and operator — we don't install ourselves. We work with a national network of trained, certified installer partners. Once your application is approved, we dispatch your project to an installer in your area. That installer will call you to schedule a site visit, where they'll confirm your home qualifies (existing solar, electrical panel access, garage space, hardwired internet), then handle permitting, install, and commissioning.

Typical timeline from signed application to powered-on battery is 4–8 weeks: roughly a week for credit + utility approval, 2 to 4 weeks for permitting, a single day on-site for the install, and 1 to 2 weeks for utility commissioning and Permission to Operate (PTO).

In parallel, Solrite runs a welcome call to verify your contract details, walk through the 20-year term, and finalize REP enrollment. Once you have PTO, you'll receive the email to switch your electricity service.

Timeline ranges to be confirmed by ops
What's the warranty?
Both your Solrite Battery VPA agreement and the warranties run for the full 20 years. Because Solrite owns and operates the battery, if anything goes wrong you call us — we handle service, replacements, and any coordination with Duracell directly.
How do I pay? Is auto-pay required?
Yes — your monthly payment is collected by automatic withdrawal (auto-ETF) from a U.S. checking account. You provide the account at signing on Exhibit D of the agreement. If a withdrawal can't process, you can also remit by check, but auto-ETF is the standard method for the program.
Can I cancel after I sign?
Yes, within a window. Per the agreement, you may cancel at any time prior to midnight of the tenth business day after the date of the transaction. We send you two copies of a notice-of-cancellation form along with your fully-executed agreement; you use either copy to cancel within that window. After the cancellation window closes, the 20-year term begins per the agreement.
Who gets the tax credits, RECs, and rebates?
Solrite. Because Solrite owns the System, Solrite owns all federal, state, and local tax credits, incentives, renewable energy credits (RECs), green tags, carbon offset credits, and utility rebates associated with the battery. You don't claim a federal tax credit on the battery — it isn't yours to claim. (Tax credits on your existing solar are unaffected; those follow the rules of your original system.)
Can I add a generator or other backup system later?
Not without Solrite's written approval. The agreement specifically prohibits connecting any other power generation or energy-storage resource to the home's electrical panel during the term — including diesel, natural gas, gasoline, propane, or LP-gas backup systems — without prior written consent. If you're considering one, talk to us first.
What if I have medical equipment that needs power?
Important: do not depend on the battery system as life support or for critical medical equipment. While the battery is designed to provide backup electricity during outages, the agreement explicitly disclaims any guarantee that it will support every load during every outage. If you have critical medical needs during an outage, contact your local emergency services or dial 911. If you have someone in the home who relies on medical equipment, please flag it on your welcome call so your installer plans accordingly.
What if I sell my home before the 20 years are up?
Per Section 7 of the agreement, you have two options (you must notify Solrite in writing 30–90 days before closing):
  1. Transfer the agreement and remaining monthly payments to the buyer, if either (A) the buyer meets Solrite's then-applicable credit requirements or (B) you or the buyer pays a $250 credit-check exemption fee. The buyer assumes the obligation to make remaining monthly payments.
  2. Prepay the remaining monthly payments yourself and transfer just the use of the System to the buyer. The System stays at the property; the buyer doesn't need to meet credit requirements or make any payments. Solrite continues to own and warrant the battery, and the buyer must continue to use a Solrite-approved REP for the discount to remain in place.
Failure to comply with one of these options is a default under the agreement.
Can I prepay the agreement early?
Yes, anytime during the Term (excluding any renewal terms), per Section 8 of the agreement. You notify Solrite in writing 30–90 days ahead. The prepayment price covers any accrued unpaid amounts plus the System Prepayment Price from Exhibit B (discounted to present value at 5%/year), plus any applicable taxes.

Important: prepaying does not release you from the agreement's other obligations, including the requirement to keep your electricity service with a Solrite-approved REP if you want to maintain the $250/mo discount on your battery payment. You're paid up but still in the program.

Could the equipment in my system change over time?
Possibly. Per Section 5 of the agreement, Solrite reserves the right to substitute, modify, or replace battery equipment — including inverters, batteries, or mounting hardware — for reasons like supply-chain constraints, technological advances, manufacturer availability, regulatory changes, or other reasons Solrite deems necessary. Any substituted equipment will fulfill the operational and contractual requirements of your agreement, and substitutions won't materially impact system performance, warranties, or expected energy output.
